December 8- Make Gingerbread Houses

This morning the girls were so excited for our activity that we got a much earlier start to our advent calendar than we normally do.  Charlotte, was still in her pajamas, albeit with some dress up clothes over the top of them.

Our scripture for the day was from Luke 22:41-45.  This passage discusses Christ's suffering in the Garden of Gethsemane.  From this scripture we learn that Christ was submissive to the will of the Father and extremely giving, giving us the greatest gift of all.

For our activity today we put together and decorated gingerbread houses.  Normally I make them, but yesterday while we were out running errands in the frigid weather on icy and snowy roads I had no desire to make another stop at the grocery store so we picked up a kit at the craft store while we were there.  The kit had four little houses in it and they were wrapped in bubble wrap.  PERFECT!  It kept the girls happy and distracted while I assembled the houses.
Gideon just chilled with his sippy cup next to us.
I cheated.  Using the frosting to assemble the houses is messy, takes forever to dry,
and then they crumble if you barely touch them.  So I used hot glue.  I was done with all four in 5 minutes and they were ready to assemble.
The big frosting pouch is a little hard for the girls to work, so we put frosting where they ask us to.
They still try to do it themselves though.  The bench was covered in frosting after they tried.
They didn't turn out fancy, but we had a lot of fun assembling them.  The girls spent over an hour working on theirs and when we got home from church this evening asked if they could work on them some more.  I love these activities with the kids, they have so much fun!

  1. We are going to do those this year too. I am thinking of using whipped frosting and graham crackers. Picking the candy that works. Cheaper then the kits and they can make more then just one. =)
